A Warning to all Skype Users

posted Monday, 7 April 2008

I am a fairly computer savvy person.
I couldn't take one apart or put one together but I can usually find my way around a programme fairly quickly.
I know what to do and what not to do on the internet and I keep a close eye on what my kids do online.

All that said, I made a stupid mistake this morning.

I recently got hooked up to Skype.
I got my Brother and Brother In Law in my contact list and hope to soon have my Dad and Father In Law all hooked up as well.
What I completely forgot to do is set up the safety settings on my account.
Anyone could find my contact address and Skype me.
This morning while sat at the computer....... with my kids!!! ........ the Skype phone rang.
I immediately thought it was a call from either my Brother or my Brother In Law. So without thinking or looking at the information on the incoming caller, I hit the receive button.

Big mistake!

What confronted me, my 8 year old and my 5 year old was a man who was obviously randomly calling women for his kicks and was doing something at his camera that no 8 and 5 year old should see a man doing!
At 9 in the morning it's not particularly something I want to see either!!

Thankfully I was awake enough to cover up and close it down before my kids registered anything serious.

So let this be a warning to all Skype users.
Check your settings. If you don't want people you don't know calling you out of the blue then make sure you set up for people in your contact list only.

As an added warning if a person with the screen name Pawel and contact info myszaczki1 calls don't respond unless you want a really good laugh because it was the smallest one I've ever seen!

I have reported him to Skype and I am looking at taking it further.
